What Factors Affect the Number of Botox Units for a Lip Flip?

Most of our lip flips fall into a low-dose range, but there isn’t a one-size-fits-all number. The amount we use depends on your lip structure, how strongly your upper lip pulls when you talk or smile, your goals (a very subtle vs. more noticeable flip), the brand of neurotoxin used, and your previous Botox history. For example, we might start a cautious first-time patient at 4 units and increase to 6–8 units at future visits if you want a stronger effect.

Someone with a stronger upper-lip muscle or a pronounced gummy smile usually needs more product than someone with a naturally relaxed upper lip. We carefully divide those units among several injection points to balance movement and shape, so the lip rolls outward without looking stiff or feeling heavy. Too little can make the result underwhelming, while too much can temporarily make sipping through a straw, whistling, or pronouncing certain sounds feel different, which is why we deliberately start low and adjust in small, measurable steps.

Many patients are also surprised by how little a lip flip uses compared to other common areas. A typical lip flip uses only a few units. At the same time, a standard frown-line treatment between the brows often requires around 15–25 units, forehead lines typically need 10–20 units, and crow’s feet can take about 10–24 units in total. Seen in this context, a lip flip is one of the lowest-dose, most targeted ways to enhance the upper lip.

How Long Does A Lip Flip Last?

The “kissing muscle” is continuously active through speaking, eating, and expression. As such, a lip flip lasts significantly shorter than other Botox treatments. Patients can expect results to return to normal around the 2-month mark. 

Our patients typically schedule lip flip appointments every 6 to 8 weeks to maintain consistent results. For convenience, many individuals schedule it in with their other treatments.

It’s important to note that results vary according to your metabolism. While some visit us more regularly, others enjoy their lip flip treatment for up to 12 weeks. 

What Happens if You Get Too Much or Too Little Botox for a Lip Flip?

Correct dosing is imperative for a lip flip. Too much neurotoxin can relax the muscles around the mouth, leading to temporary side effects such as the lips feeling clumsy or heavy and appearing asymmetric.

You might also notice that the upper lip doesn’t move naturally when you smile. In some cases, the lip can look uneven or feel heavier. While these effects are temporary, they can be disappointing if the result isn’t what you expected.

Using too little Botox creates the opposite problem. While the treatment may work, the change is so subtle that it’s hard to see any difference. The upper lip may not tilt outward enough to create the fuller look that many individuals hope for.
